Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. Since the fertilized egg cannot grow properly outside the uterus, this condition is not a viable pregnancy and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
𧬠Why It Happens?
Ectopic pregnancy can happen due to:
Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
Previous ectopic pregnancy
Pelvic infections or surgeries
Smoking or certain fertility treatments
π©Ί Common Symptoms
Sharp or stabbing abdominal or pelvic pain
Vaginal bleeding or spotting
Shoulder pain (in advanced cases)
Fainting or dizziness (if thereβs internal bleeding)
These symptoms usually appear between the 4th to 12th week of pregnancy.
π₯ Diagnosis
Ultrasound scan to locate the pregnancy
Blood tests to check hormone levels (hCG)
Pelvic examination
π Treatment Options
Depending on the stage and severity:
Medication (Methotrexate): To stop cell growth and dissolve the pregnancy tissue
Surgery: If there is a risk of rupture or internal bleeding β typically done laparoscopically
